Work begins on Queanbeyan's Basketball Stadium expansion

Queanbeyan basketballers are getting closer to scoring a better local stadium with the first sod turned on the upgrades today, thanks to the $3.5 million in funding from the Minns Government.

The funding will see the Queanbeyan and District Basketball Association modernise its existing facilities by building a new indoor basketball court and upgrading amenities to support the club's growing number of players.

With facilities dating back to the 1970s and only one full-sized court, the club stadium host games simultaneously, and the club has been limited in expanding basketball programs for local players.

the new court will meet International Basketball Federation requirements, allowing the club to host representative competition on home soil without the need to travel away for games.

Queanbeyan and District Basketball Association was founded more than 49 years ago and has grown from a grassroots club to organising games and competitions for players aged 4 years to 67 years-old, as well as fielding state representative teams. 

On a weekly basis, the club hosts over 490 children and 250 adult players and up to 400 spectators as well as various community groups including local schools.

Queanbeyan District Basketball Association Board Member, Gary Bullivant said:

"The expansion of the basketball stadium has been a long-held dream of the Queanbeyan basketball community and we are very excited that the opening of the new stadium and refurbished facilities will form part of our 50-year celebrations in 2027.

"The new court will help us meet the growing demand for basketball participation, which has been limited by a lack of court space and inadequate facilities, we'll be able to offer new programs, increase the number of home games for our teams competing in the Basketball ACT competition, and deliver other sporting and community activities.

"Most importantly, this new community facility will support young people to stay active, connected and engaged, through participation in our programs well into the future."
