Steve Whan confirms candidacy for Monaro in 2027 Election
Monday, October 19 2027
Steve Whan MP has confirmed he is seeking support of Monaro voters so he can continue delivering for our region by standing as Labor candidate at the election in March 2027 "It has been a privilege to represent the people of Monaro of several occasions, and, in return, I have consistently committed myself to delivering for our communities, particularly the services people rely on every day," Steve Whan said.
Steve Whan pointed to his record of delivery in the electorate since being elected in March 2023. Steve Whan said "I am particularly proud of the record on education. As part of Premier Chris Minns' Labor Government, I've been delighted to be able to deliver and progress critical projects. Including new or expanded schools and public preschools in Bungendore, Googong, Jerrabomberra, Jindabyne, and Queanbeyan.
"I have decided to stand again because, now more than ever, our electorate needs a representative who is sensible, hardworking and caring.
Steve continued "From key infrastructure projects in Jindabyne to essential services like the Bombala MPS expansion and major road upgrades right across the electorate, I am proud of what I have been able to secure by working constructively with our local communities. These are just a few commitments I've delivered, with more to come.
"At the 2023 election I made the commitment to reverse the massive shortages of essential staff in our hospitals, schools, ambulance and police force left by the former Liberal-National Coalition Government.
"Since then, we have hired an additional 232 nurses and 74 paramedics across our community, recruited 103 new police officers across the Monaro, South Coast, and Goulburn Police Districts and made 307 local teachers and support staff permanent - because when I say I will deliver for our community, I always do.
"The Minns Labor Government has also taken responsible steps to pay our essential workers more fairly. Nurses, teachers, police officers and paramedics have received pay increases that help ensure our kids have quality teachers in the classroom and patients have someone there to care for them when they need treatment.
"There is always more to do, but the Minns Government's first term shows that Labor is the only party in the current climate who can practically and responsibly deliver its commitment for voters of NSW.
"Being a good local member isn't about following the loudest or angriest voices. It's about providing considered representation for the quiet majority, and ensuring people have access to a strong hospital system, emergency services when they need them and schools which give our kids the best possible future.
"I am grateful for the support shown by both the community and Labor party members in encouraging me to run again. There's much more work to do, and I'm determined to continue to represent my constituents in a way that doesn't leave the voiceless and vulnerable behind."
