TAFE NSW Goulburn powers up HumeLink East Project workforce
Wednesday, 7 May 2025
TAFE NSW Goulburn is charging ahead to power the region's future workforce, delivering vital training for the $4.8 billion HumeLink East Project - one of the biggest transmission projects in NSW's history.
Approved by the Minns Labor Government in November 2024, HumeLink East is a landmark project will deliver 1,600 construction jobs and inject an estimated $6.3 billion into the regional economy.
From 19 May, TAFE NSW Goulburn will deliver three new short courses designed to get local workers job-ready for the project:
- Statement of Attainment in Excavator and Dozer Operations
- Statement of Attainment in Backhoe and Loader Operations
- Statement of Attainment in Earthworks 2 (Skid Steer and Excavator)
Once graduated, the students from Yass, Crookwell, and Goulburn will have opportunities to work as plant operators on the HumeLink East project, which involves the expansion of the existing Bannaby 500 kV substation, as well as designing and constructing a new 500 kV double circuit transmission line.
In partnership with HumeLink East, TAFE NSW has customised the training to match the real-world demands of the project. Students will gain hands-on experience with a range of commercial earthmoving equipment, while also building their skills in work health and safety and site inspections.
NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan said:
"The HumeLink East project is critical to Australia's renewable energy future and it's great to see TAFE NSW playing a role in giving locals the right hands-on skills and experience to help construct it.
"The project will provide residents with access to cheaper renewable energy and is essential to helping achieve the Australian and NSW Governments' net zero targets.
"A skilled workforce is the backbone of our economy, and this is another example of how TAFE NSW is delivering the skills training needed for strong industries and thriving NSW communities.
"This investment in practical, project-specific training means students won't just graduate with qualifications, they'll graduate ready to hit the ground running."
The Hon Bob Nanva, MLC, said:
"The Goulburn region is at the heart of Australia's renewable energy revolution, and it is critical that regional areas like Goulburn can maximise the benefits of the transition to a net zero future.
"Training is an important piece of the puzzle, and the new courses at TAFE NSW Goulburn will help position local workers for the employment opportunities that will flow from renewable energy infrastructure projects."
