MEDIA RELEASE
Safer crossing for Jerrabomberra Public School students
Tuesday, 27 May 2025
Member for Monaro Steve Whan has announced a funding allocation of over $300,000 to Queanbeyan-Palerang Council for safety upgrades in the form of a 'wombat crossing' for Jerrabomberra Public School. The funding has been committed under the NSW Government's 'Get Kids Active' grants program.
Wombat crossings are raised above the level of the road to increase the visibility of pedestrians to motorists, as well as slow down traffic. They are often used around schools as safety improvement.
"Having heard from residents, educators, and Jerrabomberra Public P&C, I have been a strong advocate for a dedicated 'wombat crossing' for students coming to and from Jerrabomberra Public School. So, it's exciting that we've secured funding to ensure young students will be safter when crossing what is a busy road, into a busy area of town.
"I'd like to thank current and former P&C members including Kylie Prescott and Jerrabomberra Primary Principal Chris Hunter for their continued advocacy on this issue.
"The design process has been undertaken by Queanbeyan-Palerang Council and Transport for NSW, with works to begin soon. I will keep the community updated as these projects progress."
