Queanbeyan community to benefit from support of new alcohol and other drug hub

Monday 15, July 2024

People as risk of harm from alcohol and drug use will have greater access to support and treatment with the NSW Government funding a new alcohol and other drug (AOD) hub in Queanbeyan.

Grand Pacific Health Queanbeyan has been funded $2.4 million and is one of 12 not-for-profit organisations to receive a share of $33.9 million over four years to deliver new, wrap-around AOD support services, as part of the NSW Government's response to the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Drug 'Ice'.

The hubs are an innovative new approach to service delivery, bringing together multiple agencies working in partnership to provide tailored treatment and care to help people address their substance use as well as broader health and social needs in a coordinated way.

Care navigators and lived experience workers will help people accessing Grand Pacific Health Queanbeyan to receive the care they need from both the multidisciplinary hub team and from other health and community services.

Each of the new hubs will be tailored to a priority population identified in the Ice Inquiry as facing as facing disproportionate barriers in accessing care. This includes people aged 18 and over in contact with the criminal justice system, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, pregnant women, people at risk of homelessness, people living in regional and rural areas, and people with co-occurring mental health needs.

Quotes attributable to Health Minister Ryan Park:

"These new alcohol and other drug hubs will boost access to much needed support services, particularly in regional and rural areas and for priority populations.

"They will provide welcoming, culturally safe environments and tailored treatment options to support people affected by alcohol and other drugs, and their families, to achieve enhanced quality of life.

"Multiple agencies will work in partnership to deliver specialist wrap around case management, counselling and psychosocial support services as well as connecting consumers to broader health and social supports."

Quotes attributable to Member for Monaro Steve Whan:

"This hub will play an important role in delivering the very best care to people in the Queanbeyan community.

"We know that having access to care is an important stap for people seeking help to address their substance use, so having these new hubs available will make a huge difference to their lives."
